Outreach at St. Luke's

St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Durham NC has always considered serving others to be an essential part of who we are as a church. In following Jesus' words and example, we find fellowship with each other and with those we serve. Our parish practices Outreach in two complementary ways: through direct, hands-on involvement of our members, and through financial support of selected programs and agencies both in Durham and throughout the world. Whether we are hammering nails at a Habitat house, making a casserole for the Soup Kitchen, or participating in one of our Outreach fundraisers, Outreach is an integral part of living our faith at St. Luke's. Read these stories and then come and join us as we "go in peace to love and serve the Lord."

Reconciliation and Reentry (R&R) Faith Team Ministry

The Reconciliation and Reentry (R&R) Ministry is a one-year, renewable, convenantal partnership between individuals recently released from prison, on probation, or an adjudicated youth, and congregational Faith Teams to help the former offender and the community reconnect and restore wholeness to one another.  This is a partnership between the Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham, the Criminal Justice Resource Center (a Durham government agency), individual faith communities like St. Luke’s, and former offenders.
Prayer before the lunch for the informational session.
On Sunday, September 18th, 2011, an informational luncheon was held in Johnson Hall,
to enjoy fellowship time with St. Luker’s and other friends and to hear from Marcia Owen, Executive Director of the Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham, Gudrun Parmer, Director of the Criminal Justice Resource Center, and “Partner Extraordinaire”, Peter Bell.
Peter Bell
They introduced us to this ministry, how it works, what is expected and, interestingly, the profound change that will result, not just for our Partner, but for each of us.

Our next step is to go through the 4-hour training session which we have tentatively scheduled for October 16th.  We’ll reconfirm that date as soon as possible.

This is a vibrant, incredibly important ministry.  Please come and learn more!  If you have questions, please contact Monnie Riggin at monnie.riggin@gmail.com.
