Outreach at St. Luke's

St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Durham NC has always considered serving others to be an essential part of who we are as a church. In following Jesus' words and example, we find fellowship with each other and with those we serve. Our parish practices Outreach in two complementary ways: through direct, hands-on involvement of our members, and through financial support of selected programs and agencies both in Durham and throughout the world. Whether we are hammering nails at a Habitat house, making a casserole for the Soup Kitchen, or participating in one of our Outreach fundraisers, Outreach is an integral part of living our faith at St. Luke's. Read these stories and then come and join us as we "go in peace to love and serve the Lord."

St. Luke's R&R - Moving Day!

Dear people of St. Luke’s,
Last weekend the Faith Team moved Chris into his new apartment. Several of us including Doug Marlowe and his father, Van Blalock and his son Matt, made a number of trips with trucks pulling trailers, transporting beds, a desk and desk chair , book case, sofa, futon, and chairs. Others came in cars filled with bedding, cleaning materials, a television, lamps kitchenware, a large rug and a microwave. Because of your generosity Chris is beginning a new chapter in his life with his own furnished apartment. All of us feel so thankful.

During the time period of asking for these donations, Chris married Chiquita, a longtime friend of his whom he had known since high school. She has a son, Donovan who is about five. So as of last weekend they were all able to be together for the first time. Again, thanks and much gratitude to all for your support.

St. Luke's R&R Team - Congratulations!

On Sunday, November 13th, St. Luke's R&R (Reconciliataion and Renentry) Faith Team met our Partner over a delicious pot luck dinner in Johnson Hall!  Christopher Graham was introduced by Marcia Owen, Executive Director of the Colalition for a Non-violent Durham.  Chris has been out of prison for about 6 months having served 6 years for armed robbery.  He deliberately did not return to his hometown, Raleigh, but instead came to Durham.  When asked, he said all he was looking for from his Faith Team was friendship!  He is a student at Durham Tech working on an associate degree in automotive maintenance.  He has also found a part time job!  He needs a drivers license, which we will help him get, so that he will be eligible for higher paying jobs that require driving.  He seems to be heading in the right direction for a much more fulfilling and productive life.

Members of St. Luke's faith team are:   Wilbur Longmire, Ken and Peach McDouall, Doug Marlowe, Monnie Riggin, Debbie Stonehouse, Ted Treible, and Nancy Wyman.  We are the first Episcopal Church in Durham to form a Faith Team.

Stay tuned for more updates as this relationship grows!

An Inspiring Note from Ginny and Bob Atwell, Co-Chair of the Fall Fling

As you know, all the money we raise through the yard sale goes to fund our Outreach progarms.  Your Outreach Committee reports on their use of those donations every year.

Once the yard sale is over and the outreach money has been counted, what happens to everything that is left over?  Does it get thrown out or go to waste?

No, your donations continue to make a positive impact in our community.  We sell as many leftover items as we can to various dealers or estate sale shops.  The additional money we raise gets added to our outreach funds.

In addition, the following donations are made:
  • Bicycles are donated to Mr. Lewis Days "Mr. Bike" on Fay Street in Durham.  Mr Days is in his late 70's and lives on Social Security.  Every year Mr. Days refurbishes hundred of bikes and donates them at Christmas to underpriviledged children here in Durham.  His bike ministry has been featured on "Good Morning America".
  • Our Mission team selects age-appropriate books, toys and some suitcases to take to Belize.  The books go into Holy Cross Anglican School's library.  The toys are used for prizes in the Valentine's Day fund raiser run by the school each year.  The suitcases are used to carry our donated supplies to Belize and then the suitcases are resold by the school to raise funds.  Funds raised by these sales are often used to provide the students with lunch, the only nutritious meal they will have that day.  Did you know that the resident's of San Mateo sometimes use our suitcases as baby beds?
  • Books are donated to the Durham Public Library.  They resell the books to raise funds for various library programs and also ship some books to areas of the country/world that need reading materials.
  • The Vets from Maple Court select household items to furnish their apartments.  These veterans, in turn, must perform community services in return for their ability to reside in Maple Court.
  • The remaining items are donated to area thrift stores.  The past few years they have gone to the Salvation Army.  The Salvation Army sells these items to raise funds for its work.  For example, during this year's tornadoes and hurricanes, the Salvation Army donated free clothing and household goods to the hundreds of families that had lost or damaged homes.  They also ran feeding programs for the thousands of people who were impacted by the storms.
So you may think of your donations as simply something that helps St. Luke's.  But your items have a much more far reaching impact.

Thanks to all of you that have made this year's Yard Sale one of our best ever.  Your donations of Treasure, Time and Talent have made a difference in Durham and beyond.    ---- Bob and Ginny

Fall Fling Set-Up Day

We had about a dozen volunteers come in Thursday afternoon and begin the sort and pricing process for the Fall Fling Indoor Yard Sale this Saturday.  It's always an adventure digging into those bags and boxes!

The whole foyer area was packed with boxes and bags...good progress.
There are tables full of books in the Sunday School Room on the right.
You never know what's in the bag!
It was a very fun afternoon.  More unpacking and pricing tomorrow and then the big sale begins at 8:00 am sharp-so come see and buy your new treasures!  There's some great stuff there!

R&R Training

Today eleven members of St. Luke’s participated in the mandatory four hour training session, offered by the Religious Coalition for a Non Violent Durham and the Durham Country Criminal Justice Resource Center.  The Team will be meeting shortly with Marcia, director of the Religious Coalition for a Non Violent Durham, to sign some forms, and to await the coming of our partner. St. Luke’s will be the first Episcopal Church in Durham to participate in this  ministry.

IHN another success!

St Luke's hosted IHN in partnership with Westminster Presbyterian Church Oct 2-4.  Twelve guests made up the cohort, the largest number we've accommodated in years -- four mothers and eight children, ranging from twelve years old to one month old.  One of the mothers is working on an online Masters degree.  Two are working full-time and may be able to move into apartments soon.  Fourteen St Luker's gave their time, energy and talents to cook meals for, drive, or spend the night with these needy folks.  Everything went very smoothly, even the 5:30AM departures.  We even heard about some extremely tasty and popular orange jello with mandarin oranges being served one night.
