Outreach at St. Luke's

St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Durham NC has always considered serving others to be an essential part of who we are as a church. In following Jesus' words and example, we find fellowship with each other and with those we serve. Our parish practices Outreach in two complementary ways: through direct, hands-on involvement of our members, and through financial support of selected programs and agencies both in Durham and throughout the world. Whether we are hammering nails at a Habitat house, making a casserole for the Soup Kitchen, or participating in one of our Outreach fundraisers, Outreach is an integral part of living our faith at St. Luke's. Read these stories and then come and join us as we "go in peace to love and serve the Lord."

NetsforLife

Did You Know??
  • each year there are 250 million cases of malaria worldwide
  • 1 million people die from malaria each year
  • 90% of all deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa
  • every 60 seconds a child dies from malaria
  • malaria is preventable
  • one chemically-treated net can protect 3 children or a mother and child from the mosquitoes that carry malaria
  • NetsforLife includes training about proper use and storage of nets as well as the distribution of nets.

In Jan, 2011, the Diocese of N. Carolina launched a year-long campaign, NetsforLife, joining Episcopal Relief and Development as it seeks to reduce the number of deaths caused by malaria.  The goal for the diocese is to purchase 40,000 nets.  This goal is based on roughly 1 net for each confirmed Episcopalian in the Diocese.  These nets will be sent to sub-Saharan Africa where 90% of all malaria deaths in the world occur.

St. Luke's is excited to take up the challenge and work to purchase these life-saving nets.  Our parish goal is 650 nets, so let's get started.  The Outreach bulletin board in the Sprague Room will document our progress.  For every net purchased, one "mosquito" will be replaced on the bulletin board by a "net".   Get your nets today!  Contact Jan Lamb at janlamb2@gmail.com with suggestions or questions.
